🏛️ ARTISTIC VISION & PHILOSOPHY
From the 1970s to the end of the century, Toshiyuki Kokubu (a.k.a. Teruyuki) led the Japanese funky soul scene, transcending the boundaries of various genres. However, with the dawn of the 21st century, his musical exploration entered a dimension unlike any framework of the past.
Recognizing the convergence between the "eternal system" of nature—where the entire macrocosm resonates within a single moment of life—and Paul Hindemith's three-dimensional composition methods, Kokubu used this foundation to continue his practice of composition, the construction of a new musical style, and the mastery of techniques. This marked the beginning of a grand, three-stage process (the embodiment of his unique "Three-Dimensional Resonance Theory") aimed at affirming his foundation as a Japanese/Asian artist and composing a new Symphony of Life.
Phase 1: Delving into the Abyss of the Self (Establishment of the Z-Axis) ── Transmission of Extended Harmony and the Resonance of the Origin
In the early 21st century, inheriting the will of his late father and musical mentor, Teruaki Kokubu, he devoted himself to the compositional methods of modern music master Paul Hindemith. This exploration reached a decisive turning point, sparked primarily by his fateful encounter with Rie Kokubu.
Through profound spiritual resonance with her, Kokubu launched the WINDS OF ASIA Project with guitarist Yujiro Wada and others, reaching the realization that "a universal law, identical to the 'eternal system' governing the macrocosm, operates within sound." During this period, he systematized his research and established the music education and research institute "Neo Music Arrangement" to pass down Hindemith's "Extended Harmony" and his own music creation techniques to the next generation. It was also then that "Spring Flower"—a hymn to life singing of both its ephemerality and eternity—was born. The vertical depth of spirit and sound in music, the "Z-Axis (Abyss of Nature)," was firmly established in both education and creation.
Phase 2: Resonance with the Horizontally Expanding Environment (Expansion of the Y-Axis) ── A Blueprint for Realizing Unique Music, and the Harmony of Earth and Nature
Having discovered his vertical foundation, Kokubu proposed "SURROUNDINGS CULTURE MUSIC/ART"—music and art born from a "lifestyle" completely surrounded by and integrated with the natural environment.
Kokubu moved his base to the deep mountains of Nara with a partner who shared his pursuit of life's deepest dimensions. This was not a mere relocation; it was a grand, strategic investment of time. Through the practice of an organic mindset and lifestyle, he sought to overcome his own handicaps, break free from invisible constraints, and test a blueprint for constructing music capable of answering the demands of the coming era—embodying the vision required for Phase 2.
Immersing himself in the mountains of Nara, he practiced a lifestyle incorporating natural farming, fully synchronized with nature. He pursued what music truly is when it embodies the systems of nature, the environment, and the universe. Forming "THE SUPER 3 (TS3)" with members who answered his call, and through events like the "Okitsumo Jazz Festival," he completed an overwhelming musical foundation expanding horizontally across the earth (the Y-Axis), which became the decisive passport for his next leap forward.
Phase 3: Leaping Forward and Broadcasting to the World (Aufheben of the X-Axis) ── The Fusion of East and West and the Birth of SAMURAI LABEL
To return to the ancient spirit and achieve the "fusion (FUSE)" of East and West. And, breaking down the walls between the two, to let a magnificent "Symphony of Life" resonate across the Earth.
To make this grand vision a reality, Kokubu was guided to the coast of Hakata Bay (Chikushi)—a geopolitical site of Aufheben and a microcosm of the Mediterranean world where East and West intersect.
In this land, he had a fateful encounter with Megumi Yuki (Representative of SAMURAI LABEL), a woman of absolute driving force and strong will, and finally established a "music label" to broadcast his music to the world. Fusing Hindemith's theory with the themes he had long pursued, he perfected his unique "Three-Dimensional Resonance Theory" and began producing THE SUPER 3's 1st debut album, THE SUN OF A NEW BEGINNING “Winter to Spring”.
A return to his origins (Kanto), a foundation of unity with nature and life (Nara), and a base for broadcasting to the world (Fukuoka / Hakata Bay). Harmonizing the energies of the Z-Axis (depth) and Y-Axis (breadth) that resonate across space, Toshiyuki Kokubu is now firing "new music for a new era"—which has sublated (Aufheben) all music of the past—in a straight line toward the future (X-Axis) from here on the coast of Hakata Bay.
